I heard the 1979 popular hit song “Video Killed the Radio Star” on the radio this week. If you recall, that song by the Buggels was the first music video that aired on MTV during its inception the same year. Coincidentally, that same day I read the National Association of Realtors buyer profile that is released at the end of every year. The NAR 2010 Profile concluded that over 90% of all home buyers used the internet as a source for searching homes to purchase. Conversely, the percentage of home buyers who used print advertising, such as magazines or newspapers, continued to decline dramatically, even among those buyers over the age of 65. Over 83% of home buyers mentioned that pictures were very important in their home search, a feature that cannot be duplicated in print advertising effectively due to ad cost and size limitations. The analogy I draw is that the “internet has killed the print star” like the “video killed the radio star.” As technology evolved from music videos to I-Pod downloads, our real estate marketing has evolved from newspaper photos to bright, vibrant online photos and videos.
